Staatliche Kunstsammlung Dresden
In the Archiv der Avantgarden

The Archiv der Avantgarden in Dresden is a unique collection of artworks, objects and documents from the artistic avant-gardes of the 20th century. The collection comprises over 1.5 million works, which have been brought together by Egidio Marzona over more than five decades. Heine Lenz Zizka was commissioned with the conception and realization of the archive's research platform.

The research platform is located on the second floor of the Dresdner Blockhaus, which was completely renovated by the architects Nieto Sobejano - a public place where the contents of the collection can be explored.

For the research platform, we developed archive-appropriate presentation areas for the collection and a flexible space utilization concept with numerous workstations.

Pedestals, display cabinets, shelves, display boards and drawers invite you to explore the exhibits and provide an inspiring environment during research work. Adapters allow the flexible attachment of lighting, power supply or document holders, allowing each workstation to be individually adapted to the respective needs. In the context of the furniture, literature and objects, a lively meeting place for people and art, history and the present is created.

The extensive library is clearly structured and easy to use for researchers thanks to the classification system we have developed.

Prof. Achim Heine, whose designs are also part of the Archiv der Avantgarden collection, designed a set of individual experimental furniture for the special requirements of the research platform.

This includes purist lounge furniture that allows a variety of different seating configurations and can also be stacked to form a cube to save space.

Achim Heine taught product design for 28 years as Professor of Experimental Product Design at the Berlin University of the Arts.

His work for companies such as Vitra and Leica is part of many international collections and is also represented in the Archiv der Avantgarden.

The Archiv der Avantgarden Egidio Marzona is a globally unique concept for the realization of which numerous supporters have made their contribution. These are especially acknowledged on the plaque designed by HLZ in the entrance area.
