Hamburger Kunsthalle
CDF - Catalog
Can the cover of an art catalog open up new perspectives? Caspar David Friedrich's oeuvre has already been illuminated, analyzed and interpreted in countless publications. And yet, not every secret of this icon of Romanticism seems to have been revealed.

To mark the 250th anniversary of Caspar David Friedrich's birth, the Hamburger Kunsthalle published a comprehensive catalog with current positions on the artist. Heine Lenz Zizka was responsible for the design and supervised the realization in close cooperation with the museum and publisher.
A conscious decision was made not to include an illustration of the works of art omnipresent in the anniversary year on the cover. Instead, the cover features an abstract color gradient with a direct reference to the work of Caspar David Friedrich. This interpretation is suitable for stimulating the viewer's fantasy and imagination and creating new perspectives on the artist.
“At first glance, the picture in the catalog looks purely abstract. But at second glance I imagined I recognized a landscape painting by Friedrich [...]... so yesterday I sat at my laptop and googled paintings that I thought I had known for a long time. Sometimes it apparently helps not to see paintings in order to see them more clearly.” Oskar Piegsa for Zeit
The catalog is published by Hatje Cantz
